Monk Parakeets (Pasir Ris Park)

Monk Parakeets also known as Quaker Parrots were introduced to Singapore as pets. Some this parakeets have thrived over the years and spread all over Singapore and have been also added in the Singapore Bird Checklist. At the moment, Monk Parakeet is not in this list. Monk parakeets have interesting nesting behaviour. – they are the only known parrots in the world that builds nests out of branches rather than nesting in cavities. Their nest unlike the usual nest we see are fully enclosed with many nesting chambers constructed within. The number of nesting chambers in a nest usually varies from 2 to 20, each housing a pair of parakeets. But they can grow to be quite massive like the one in Pasir Ris Park Tower which grew so large before it was cleared. The Monk Parakeet's are slowly rebuilding the nest again at the point of this writing.

Today i saw a few Monk Parakeet. Two of them have very distinct white orbital eye rings.
